Meet your IBS Naturopath

Hi, I’m Norelle Hentschel, a degree-qualified Naturopath in Brisbane with a clinical focus on integrative gut health.

I have a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy and in 2025 I completed a Master of Advanced Naturoapthic Medicine. My clinic has been operating since 2015 and I see patients both in person and on-line.

Why work with a naturopath

As an IBS naturopath in Brisbane, my role is to support the underlying drivers of irritable bowel syndrome that influence the gut and not just manage symptoms.

This whole-body approach focuses on:

  • Reducing flare frequency
  • Supporting long-term comfort and confidence

What Is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal condition characterised by:

  • Altered bowel habits (constipation, diarrhoea or mixed patterns)
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Changes in stool consistency
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Sensitivity to certain foods or stress

IBS is diagnosed using clinical criteria (such as the Rome IV criteria) once other medical conditions have been ruled out.

Importantly: IBS  typically involves gut sensitivity rather than structural damage. That sensitivity can often be reduced.

When to Seek Medical Care for IBS Symptoms

While IBS is a functional condition, it is important that new or changing digestive symptoms are properly assessed by a medical doctor to rule out other gastrointestinal conditions.

You should seek medical review if you experience:

  • Unexplained or unintentional weight loss
  • Rectal bleeding or black stools
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Iron deficiency or unexplained anaemia
  • Night-time diarrhoea that wakes you from sleep
  • Severe or progressively worsening abdominal pain
  • Onset of bowel changes after age 50
  • A family history of bowel cancer, coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Ongoing fever alongside digestive symptoms

These features may require further investigation, such as blood tests, stool analysis, imaging or referral to a gastroenterologist.

Collaborative Care

At Your Remedy Naturopathy, we support a collaborative approach. We encourage clients to maintain regular communication with their GP and complete appropriate medical screening before or alongside naturopathic care.

If red flag symptoms are identified during your consultation, we will recommend prompt medical assessment.

An Evidence-Informed Holistic IBS Framework

Regulate | Repair | Rebuild

At Your Remedy Naturoapthy , holistic evidence-informed care for IBS care focuses on three interconnected systems.

👉🏻 The Gut-Brain Axis

The gut and brain communicate constantly via the vagus nerve, immune system and microbiome.

Stress, past illness, infection, food reactions and microbiome imbalance can all disrupt this communication, increasing gut sensitivity and motility changes.

Your treatment plan may include

  • Microbiome-supportive strategies
  • Targeted probiotics (when clinically indicated)
  • Herbal medicines that calm gut sensitivity
  • Nutrition to support mucosal repair

👉🏻 Nervous System Regulation

IBS is strongly linked to nervous system tone. When the body is in a chronic “fight or flight” state, digestion is down-regulated.

We integrate

  • Stress physiology education
  • Lifestyle and rhythm strategies
  • Herbal medicine to support stress management
  • Practical, achievable regulation tools
  • The latest research on the gut-brain axis

This is not about “it’s just stress.”
It’s about understanding the physiology of digestion and restoring balance.

👉🏻 Personalised Nutrition & Food Tolerance

Food is rarely the sole cause of IBS — but it often influences symptom expression.

Rather than long-term restrictive dieting, we focus on

  • Structured elimination and reintroduction when appropriate
  • Building the functional health of the digestive tissue with supportive nutrients
  • Anti-inflammatory nutrition
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Identifying individual tolerance thresholds
  • Supporting digestive secretions and enzyme function

The goal is expansion, not restriction.

This framework is informed by current Complemenatary and Alternative medicine IBS research and Australian Clinical Guidelines.

How Naturopathy Complements Conventional IBS Care

Many clients come to us after working with their GP or gastroenterologist. We value collaborative care.

Conventional IBS Management Often Focuses On:

  • Antispasmodic medications
  • Laxatives or anti-diarrhoeals
  • Fibre supplementation
  • Low FODMAP diet advice
  • Antidepressants for gut sensitivity

These can provide symptom relief.

Naturopathic IBS Care Adds:

  • Individualised microbiome support
  • Nervous system regulation strategies
  • Root cause nutritional assessment
  • Comprehensive case history analysis
  • Hormonal, immune and stress system integration
  • Long-term digestive resilience building

We work alongside your medical team — not instead of them.

🚩 If red flag symptoms arise (unexplained weight loss, bleeding, severe pain, family history of bowel disease), referral for medical investigation is prioritised.

What IBS Improvement Can Feel Like

When the gut is regulated, clients may experience:

🌿 Comfortable digestion after meals

🌿 Reduced bloating

🌿 Predictable bowel movements

🌿 Greater food confidence

🌿 Improved energy

Frequently asked questions about Naturopathy & IBS

What is the main cause of IBS?

IBS does not have one single cause. It is typically driven by a combination of:

  • Gut-brain axis dysregulation
  • Altered gut motility
  • Increased visceral sensitivity
  • Microbiome imbalance
  • Post-infectious changes
  • Stress physiology

Effective treatment addresses multiple contributing factors.

Can IBS be cured naturally?

IBS is considered a functional condition rather than a structural disease. While there is no universal “cure,” many people experience significant symptom improvement and long-term stability with personalised dietary, microbiome and nervous system support.

Outcomes vary between individuals.

Do you work alongside gastroenterologists or GPs?

Yes. Integrative care is encouraged. Clients can continue medical treatment while receiving naturopathic support.

Is this safe alongside medications?

Yes. I always review medications to and coordinate care where needed.

Is IBS caused by stress?

Stress does not cause IBS on its own, but it can significantly influence gut motility, sensitivity and inflammation via the gut–brain axis. Nervous system regulation is an important component of IBS care.

What is the best diet for IBS?

There is no single “best” diet for IBS.
Short-term structured approaches such as low FODMAP can reduce symptoms, but long-term management focuses on personal tolerance, diversity and gut repair.

Individual assessment is essential.

Should I see a doctor before seeing a Naturopath for IBS

Yes. A medical assessment is important to rule out conditions such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal disorders. We encourage collaborative care and can work alongside your GP or specialist.

How much does a consultation cost?

Consultation fees are transparent and available before booking. Fees are for consults only. Any products purchased from the dispensary are an additional cost.

The current consultation fees can be found on the Book a consult page. Naturopathy is not covered by Medicare. Some private health insurance funds offer rebates for Naturopathy. Check with your fund for details.

If you want more information before booking I also offer a free Discovery Call.

What are your qualifications?

I hold an undergraduate Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) and a post graduate Master of Advanced Naturopathic Medicine. I am a professional member of the Australian Naturopathic Practitioners Association (ANPA) which requires me to hold all appropriate insurances and complete on-going professional development education to ensure my care aligns with current best practice.
